En Gedi is an oasis in the wilderness. Located on the West side of the Dead Sea, the water, lush vegetation, and wildlife of En Gedi are not what you would expect. In ancient times En Gedi was a source of balsam, used for medicinal purposes and for perfume.
En Gedi has been a place of Israelite settlement since the days of Joshua(Joshua 15:61-62). This is also one of the places David hid from Saul (1 Samuel 24) and the name is used to describe a place of refuge and safety.
