Wailing Wall

The Western, or Wailing Wall is located in the Old City of Jerusalem at the foot of the western side of the Temple Mount. It is a ruined piece of a wall that once surrounded the Temple Mount. It is one of the most sacred sites of the Jews, and they often come here to mourn the destruction of their temple. It is common for people to write prayers on slips of paper and place them in the wall.

At the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry, the wall  was part of a retaining wall built by Herod the Great to hold up the soil of an enlarged temple mount.
