Part of the Family

Based On: Hebrews 2:10-18

I just happened to see part of a TV show where family members were brought back together.  For example, in the episode I saw a man and his wife were looking for the girl they had given up for adoption more than twenty years ago.  They were young and unmarried at the time and believed that letting someone else raise their daughter would be best.  Since then they had married and had other children and were raising their family, but they always wondered what happened to their first child.  They tried to find her, but couldn’t.  Then this TV show came along, found their daughter and reunited them.

Where is there peace?

Based On: Luke 2:13-14

The shepherds were doing what they did every night – watching the sheep. The night was quiet and peaceful as a single angel told them Christ was born in Bethlehem. Suddenly thousands of angels, if not tens of thousands, broke the peace of that night and sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” The Christ child came and the angels proclaim that there is now peace. As I look around I don’t see much peace in this world. Where is this peace?

Jesus Became One of Us

Based On: Hebrews 2:10-18

Have you ever considered how utterly preposterous the Christian religion is?  I’m not saying that I don’t believe it.  By the grace of God I certainly do believe it, but when you look at the fundamental truth of Christianity, that the creator became one of his creation to save those he created, it is absurd to our human way of thinking.  No other religion has anything like it.  Of course there are Greek myths that talk about the gods only appearing to be human, but usually not for the benefit of human beings.

Let the Peace of Christ Fill Your Life

Based On: Colossians 3:12-17

Have you ever walked into a house where someone just finished baking bread?  Do you remember the smell when the oven door opens and the bread is taken out to cool?  It is a delicious smell and no matter where you go in the house, the aroma seems to follow you.  The smell fills the house so that no matter where you go in the house you can’t stop thinking about fresh bread.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.  In the same way that the aromas from the kitchen permeate the entire house, let the peace of Christ fill your life.  First, Paul describes what it looks like to be filled with the peace of Christ, then he explains how we have that peace.

The Daze Before Christmas

What do you think?  Isn’t that a catchy title – “The Daze Before Christmas”?  You know, those days before Christmas can be so busy – so full of gift shopping, decorating, and Christmas gatherings – that they leave you in a daze.  But I must be honest.  The title isn’t my own idea.  The title for this article comes from the video-based Bible study we will use for the Sundays in Advent (November 30th – December 14th ).

God’s Perfect Planning

Based on:  Galatians 4:4-7

Have you ever bought a gift for someone that you are particularly proud of? Have you ever experienced one of those times when you knew exactly what would be the perfect gift for that special person? You planned very carefully how you would get that gift and wrap it and get it into the house so that they would not know.  Then you couldn’t wait to give it to that person.  It brought you pleasure to give that gift, because you put a lot of effort into that gift.  You thought about what kind of gift to give and you planned just how to give it.  This morning we look at the preparations God made to give his gift and we also look at the wonderful gift he gave.

The Word Made Flesh

Based on:  John 1:1-14

Dear Christian, when you go home this morning, celebrate Christmas!  Celebrate by giving gifts because you know the gift God has given you.  Celebrate by spending time with family knowing God has made you part of his family.  Celebrate by eating good food remembering the marriage feast God has promised you.  But as you celebrate may you never forget why you celebrate Christmas – that when Christ was born God showed his love for us.

A Christmas Tradition!

Martin Luther loved Christmas.  Some sources even claim that Luther started the tradition of bringing an evergreen tree into the home and decorating it at Christmas time.  This is an interesting thought, but even though the Christmas tree tradition did start in Germany around the time of Luther, there is nothing to tell us conclusively that Luther started it.

Sunday School Christmas Program Introduction

Our message this morning spans all of time. We begin with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the first promise of a Savior. We follow this promise as it travels like a pilgrim through time until it finds its fulfillment in a manger in Bethlehem. Finally, we look at ourselves and all Christians throughout the ages – we are all pilgrims as we travel on this earth waiting for our Savior to return at the end of time.
